Sustainable Farming

Sustainable farms protect soil health, water quality, and biodiversity for future generations.

The "Sustainable" label on Community FarmTable products indicates farms that have adopted a set of verified practices aimed at long-term ecological health. These include no-till or minimal-till cultivation, integrated pest management (IPM), cover cropping, and composting over synthetic fertilization.

Sustainable farming is about systems thinking: how does each management decision affect soil microbiology, watershed health, insect populations, and atmospheric carbon? Our partner farms document these practices in annual self-assessments reviewed by our sourcing team and third-party auditors.

By choosing sustainable products, you directly support farms that are investing in the long-term health of their land. Many of these farms are building toward full organic certification, which can take 3+ years of documented practice before USDA approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is "sustainable" defined and verified?+
We use a checklist covering soil health practices, water management, biodiversity, and chemical use. Farms are reviewed annually, and spot audits occur at least once per year.
Is sustainable the same as regenerative?+
Regenerative agriculture goes a step further, actively restoring degraded ecosystems. Sustainable practices aim to "sustain" current health. Many of our farms practice elements of both.
How can I learn more about a specific farm's practices?+
Each farm profile on Community FarmTable includes a "Farming Practices" section where farms describe their approach in their own words.
