Chicago's Food Miles Problem — and How Local Sourcing Changes Everything

The USDA estimates that the average American meal travels 1,500 miles before reaching the plate. In Chicago, with our reliance on produce grown in California, Mexico, and South America, that number often exceeds 2,000 miles for a single grocery trip. Each of those miles requires refrigerated transport, fuel, packaging designed for extended shelf life, and handling by workers who are often among the most economically vulnerable people in the food chain.

Community FarmTable's sourcing policy is simple: every farm partner must be within a 100-mile radius of Chicago's city center. That radius encompasses rich agricultural land in northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and northwest Indiana — fertile soil with a growing season that, with proper technique, can supply fresh food nearly year-round. In March 2026, our platform facilitated over 3,200 orders from farms averaging 42 miles from Chicago. That's an estimated 94,200 food miles saved compared to sourcing the same products conventionally.

But food miles are only part of the picture. Local sourcing also means money stays in the regional economy, produce is fresher (reducing food waste), farms receive fair prices without the margin compression of long supply chains, and Community FarmTable can audit and vouch for farm practices in ways that are impossible at global scale. We publish our sourcing data monthly — including average farm distance, total lbs delivered per neighborhood, and food miles saved. Because transparency isn't optional. It's the whole point.
